The original point of the dual hidden blades was to allow Ezio to perform double assassinations, but being able to do it without two blades also makes sense. Altair updated the blade designs to not require the finger cutting. Giovanni had all his fingers. Altair had all his on the hand with the second blade he built. Imo the hidden blade should stay as a tool for silent assassinations only, like in Unity and Syndicate. Being able to fight groups of enemies and even parry attacks with just a hidden blade makes it too game-breaking and OP. And if you enter open conflict, grab your spear, sword, long bow, or whatever, and fight. What is the actual frag with Darius hidden blade? How come Bayek is getting the Darius hidden blade in ACO, which looks as much traditional as any assassin would have in Masyaf 1k years later. But in ACOD Darius is using external blade, which is no way hidden, and it is so broad, that you can smell it a mile away. He uses it during killing Xerxes and in the Eagle's Bearer timelines.
